Spring 2015 - Day 6

You know what I love about life at sea? That I can leave my room at 7:50 and have plenty of time to eat breakfast, fill my waterbottle, and walk to class for 8:00. It's wonderful.

In photography we learned all about apurature and shutter speed. I now actually know what the Av and Tv settings on my camera mean and even how to use them. We went outside to the starboard side of the 7th deck and practiced taking pictures of water on a lower shutter speed. Our professor stole a pitcher of water from the dining room and poured it out while we took pictures of the stream. The goal was to be able to see the water moving. Everyone struggeled but I caught on just fine. A lot of people also struggled to understand aperture and shatter speed while we were sitting in the classroom and I thought it was clear as day. She did give us this huge list of numbers that we have to memorize, that will be tricky but whoever said photography was easy.

The sea has been weirdly calm and yet the ship has been rocky.

How do I even explain this?

When you look out at the water it looks incredibly smooth and all the ripples are underneath it, not breaking the surface. So it looks beautifully calm. But our swells are at least 8ft and the ship has been rocking quite a bit. It's just not choppy.

My second class, World Mythologies, was absolutely boring. The material seems interesting but it is just so heavy that I had a hard time taking in any information. It doesn't help that my other three class are all lab classes where we leave the classroom and do interesting things. My brain is not into sitting and having someone lecture. But when he started talking about Hawaiian myths it was interesting. They are into tiki gods and carvings. Hopefully I see some examples of it when we are in Hawaii.

For the majority of the afternoon I continued to read The Shining. It's a pretty intense book, I've gotten really sucked into it so even when I am sitting with friends I am not participating in the conversation at all. Worth it.

In my afternoon class we made handmade postcards using transfer with wintergreen oil. It was pretty cool. The theme was journey so I brought a map with me and the word Transform because when I think of a journey I think of you transforming as a person. The map didn't transfer onto the mixed media paper like I thought it would but it did look really cool so I just went with what was happening and ended up with a really weird design of grey shapes. The word transform transferred really well and it looks really cool. Not at all what I had pictured going into it but I liked the way it turned out.

In the evening I went to an explorers seminar about how our oceans are changing. It was about pollution and global warming and was interested but part of the way through I started reading my book again and stopped paying attention.

I honestly can not remember what I did the rest of the evening and I am pretty sure that is because I sat in the piano lounge with everyone and read my book and then went back to my cabin and read it some more. I did get noodles though. Dinner was not very impressive so I was starving at 9:30. They were delicious.

Tomorrow is our last day before Hawaii and honestly, I am relieved. This ship is starting to feel pretty small. Which is interesting because it never felt that way last time. I still haven't decided why that has changed. It's something that I reflect on often and am trying to combat by keeping busy, and this book is definitely helping in that department.

The goal is to finish it tomorrow.
