Sing You Home - A Book Review

Now that I am back at school, my pleasure reading has dwindled a bit. Ok, a lot. I spend the majority of my time reading about management and accounting now. Not the most interesting things to talk about, although my management teacher is keeping me on my toes. How could a person with the mantra, 'It only gets worse before it gets worse' not keep you on your toes?

I did manage to squeeze one book in before school became too crazy, I am fortunate enough to work at a job where I have a little downtime that is perfect for reading. The book I read is by my favorite author, Jodi Picoult. I love her because she is not afraid to write about the tough stuff. Her books make me think about my views on difficult situations and subjects.

This book was no different. It is about a same sex couple that are forced into custody battle over frozen embryos. It explores the separation of church and state and same sex couple rights. The book was very sad at some points and jumped right into the heart wrenching stuff with out hesitation.

The book also explored the little known art of music therapy which I now find fascinating. I love how this author writes a book that explores a big picture but then also works in these tiny little details that open your eyes to the world through anothers perspective.

Additionally, this book has a musical component. Jodi Picoult wrote poems about how the main character was feeling at different points throughout the book and then had her friend put them to music. You can download the tracks for free from her website and then play them when prompted throughout the book so you can get a better sense of the feeling of the story.

I would recommend reading this book not only because it was a fabulous and engaging story but because it gives you the chance to discover something about yourself as you read. This is the kind of story that makes you feel human.

So read it, listen to it, be inspired by it, and then pass it on.
