Day 26

Today was one of those really boring sea days. Except that tonight they are playing Oz The Great and Powerful and I am not watching it. I sat through 45 minutes and then couldn’t handle it anymore.

Sorry to those of you that love that movie but I watched it one the plane ride to London and it was absolutely terrible. And by terrible I mean the plot was ok and I liked the ending but the dialogue was endlessly cheesy and the acting was terrible. James Franco and Mila Kunis are generally outstanding but this was just painful.

So I am doing homework. Actually blogging and sending emails instead of doing homework but whatever.

You know how I intensely contemplated the reason that people want to go to Paris? I concluded that the reason is because it is a beautiful place. Both the language and the architecture and the general feel of it just create an environment that people want to be in.

The French are very laid back, and by very I mean ridiculously. It creates a very chill vibe. You can sense it in the air. Meals are longer, people are more relaxed, things just move at a slower pace. In the other cities we were in you could feel the hustle and bustle. I compared London to NYC and then went on to compare all of the cities to each other in the sense that they all felt the same. And they did. Lots of people running around. Paris was different. There were still people, they just weren't moving with that sense of urgency. People would just be stopped making out of the street. Apparently PDA isn't a thing. Or is a thing but no one cares. Maybe that is why they call it the most romantic city?

Anyway. Paris is certainly a unique city. It was still on my list of places to go, I want to experience it again.

Tonight I turned my attention to Ireland. We had our cultural pre-port where we learned about Irish literature and art and music. I love Irish music, that is now what I am the most excited about. I am definitely finding a pub that has live music and then having a blast listening to it. It is so joyous.

There is a student on the ship, Lizzie, who did competitive Irish step dancing so she gave us a demonstration. It would be cool to go to a show actually in Ireland. We were shown a video of a music session in a pub that included dancing. It looked like so much fun to be a part of. Even more fun then the band that was in the Beer Garden in Germany. I LOVE the live music and expressions of joy and fun that are in these countries. Why don't we have that in America?

Well, I guess we kind of do in the south. Hoe down anyone?

In Travel Writing today we watch a very sad video about the potato famine. We also talked about painting a picture of the places you go using all of your senses and describing the place you are instead of just saying that you are there. Let's try it:

I am sitting in the fifth floor dining room. It's meant for quiet study so while silence usually fills the entire space today there is a group in the corner that lets a laugh slip every once in a while. I have a book next to me entitled The Box, its cold under my elbow. There is the faint smell of the food that was served for dinner, its not pleasant. The chair underneath me is warm and hard, the green fabric matches the carpet almost perfectly. The monotony of the green is perfect to stare at while deep in thought, which happens a lot when you are trying your hardest to write things about tides for Bio.

How was that?

Hopefully describing Ireland will be more interesting. I am picturing a lot of green.

I am running out of things to talk about. Does this mean I have to go right about tides now?
